BackgroundDIY Browser is an online video library of handy tutorials on all aspects of home repairs and activities.
My Role. UX design from conception to delivery including user research, concept development, prototyping followed by visual and interaction design. Project goal. To create a platform for DIY enthusiasts can find new tips and tricks to make and fix items. The challenge. In a society of replacement, people no longer value items - anything broken is instantly thrown away while new items fall out of fashion on a weekly basis. The challenge is to provide tools to make a sustainable change as well as encourage some education. Target audience. New home owners, young families/children carers. |
Research
In order to understand the users better and ensure I’m designing for their needs, I have conducted interviews and created empathy maps as well as user personas based on them. A primary user group identified through research were the elderly users, followed by people that have medical conditions. This user group confirmed initial assumptions about their needs, but research suggested more added features like form (pill, tablet ect) illustration as well as being able to set reminders.
Pain points were identified, that were passed onto ideation stage.

Initial design concepts
Ideation. Some quick freehand sketches as part of the ideation process on possible look of the and feel of the layout for the app.
Digital wireframes. After some drafts, modified ideas were transferred into digital wireframes, mixing and matching elements while shaping the more final product.

User testing
Once the low fidelity prototype was ready, a user study was conducted.
To organise testing results, affinity diagram was used. After some organisation, sticking points and possible solutions have been generated. Usability study findings After the user testing, 3 key findings have been identified: 1. Search While search faction was present, users found it difficult to guess the right keywords 2. Comments Users reported wanting to comment on videos with their impressions 3. Suggestions Further watching section was missed by the users |

Mockups
Based on the insights from the usability studies, I applied design changes:

High-fidelity prototype
After completing high fidelity designs, it was time to connect them into a user flow and produce a working high fidelity prototype. |
Takeaways & Future development
Impact
Users shared that the platform would be an attractive option to not only find specialised help regarding DIY but also join of like-minded community. What I learned
Seeing users interact with the prototypes and hearing their feedback highlighted some crucial functionality that was left out, proving users know best. Development The platform will naturally develop and grow with input of the community - more possible functions could be implemented like tool sharing option. |
